Journeys memorial Tributes to Steve Perry

The 2006 death of Steve Perry, former lead singer of the legendary rock band Journey, was felt deeply by fans throughout the world.

Immortalized in their songs such as “Don’t Stop Believing” and “Open Arms,” Perry’s voice had a unique, soulful quality to it that touched people’s hearts. To honor his memory, Journey fans created several memorial tributes to the singer.

One of the most unique tributes was titled “Steve Perry’s Journeys.” A website created in 2007, it was a virtual “memorial journey” that followed a path from Perry’s birth in Hanford, California, through his rise to fame in the music industry and all the way to his home in Frankenmuth, Michigan.

It included archival live performances and images, in-depth biographical information, and interviews with friends and colleagues.

Anime fans also paid tribute to Perry. Many drew fan art featuring his likeness and created videos featuring his iconic songs. “Don’t Stop Believing,” for example, was used in several high-profile anime series, such as Evangelion and Fullmetal Alchemist.

Fans also devoted an entire episode of the popular Shōnen-ai anime series Super Gals! to Steve Perry, with the main character singing his songs as an homage.

In Hanford, local fans pooled their resources and collaborated with Journey to produce a life-sized bronze statue of Steve, which was unveiled in 2008.

Located in the city park, the statue features a larger-than-life replica of the singer and messages of peace and love inscribed around its base.

A plaque nearby reads: “In remembrance of Steve Perry, whose voice and spirit live on in our hearts forever.”

Fans around the world contributed to a massive online tribute album, titled “A Journey in Memory of Steve Perry.” Hundreds of musicians from all genres and 40 different countries recorded their versions of Journey songs and hosted the collection on a dedicated website.

It included an anthology of stories from Steve’s fans as well as a virtual museum dedicated to his life and career.

The set began with Journey’s version of Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven,” and ended with the song “Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin.’” Before departing, bassist Ross Valory printed a large portrait of Perry on the stage and had the audience hold it up while they sang.

After the show concluded, Steve’s portrait was displayed at the venue and remained there for years to come.

The ongoing memorial tributes to Steve Perry are an indication of the lasting impact of his music and career.

Fans around the globe have honored him with artwork, music, websites, and of course, a statue. As fans remember Steve and the music he created during his lifetime, his voice and spirit live on.
