Shin became a superstar when he played the young North Korea soldier in the movie Joint Security Area (2000) directed by Park Chan-wook. In this film abbreviated as “JSA,” the role of the North Korean soldier was supposed to be played by a younger person, but director Park Chan-wook changed the age setting of the role to match Shin Ha-kyun’s age.

He continued to appear in several films, and in the summer of 2005, the films he appeared in were all released together, and the 1st, 2nd, and 4th most popular films were those starring Shin Ha-kyun.

Shin’s most noteworthy performances can be traced in two films set in the background of the Korean War namely Welcome to Dongmakgol (2005) and The Front Line (2011). Shin Ha-kyun is a versatile actor whose remarkable roles included a village postman in A Letter From Mars (2003), a man with developmental disabilities in My Brother (2004), AND a murder suspect under interrogation in Murder, Take One (2005).

Shin is also highly remembered for his role as a hitman of eccentric temperament in No Mercy for the Rude (2006), a struggling artist in The Devil’s Game (2008), a sick husband in Thirst (2009), a romantic music teacher in Cafe Noir (2009), and a macho cop in Foxy Festival (2010).

Thus, in the early 2000s, around the age of 30, he had already become a leading young actor in the film industry. Although his career has given him the image of being a film actor, he has also appeared in many plays, dramas, and music videos.

Shin’s top notch villainous role in Big-Match (2014) and the portrayal of the admiral of a new Joseon Empire in the film Empire of Lust (2015) made headlines. In 2016, he starred in the crime drama Pied Piper and in the comedy thriller film Room No.7.

The other films in line that brought a popular acclaim to Shin were the 2018 comedy films What a Man Wants and My Exceptional Brother, the medical drama Soul Mechanic (2020) and the thriller drama Beyond Evil (2021).
