Is Phantom Anime Worth Watching?
Plot
Before we get into whether you should watch the series or not, let us give you an overview of what the anime is about.
A mysterious organization called Inferno turns people into Phantoms who are essentially killing machines.
These Phantoms have no memory of their past and are ordered to kill when they are told or when they must protect their own life.
The story has exciting arcs where the layered characters are given their due until the final moment when nothing is as it seems.
The story focuses on Ein and Zwei, two Phantoms who must make life-threatening choices from the start.
Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom is a complex take on themes that are often left unexplored and was originally released in 2009.
Definitely watch if…
If you are a fan of Black Lagoon, Jormungand, and Darker than Black, you are probably going to like Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom.
The anime series is all about violence, betrayal, mafia, and tough choices one must make. It is realistic in many aspects and so if you love that type of anime, you will enjoy this one.
The anime series is heavily inclined towards character development and focuses on the main protagonists rather than the action part.
It has sufficient action sequences that are noteworthy but the character development is dominant throughout the series. If you like such stories then the anime series is a must-watch for you.
The anime touches on deep themes such as free will and morality which will make you question the actions of the characters.
If you can ignore the many flaws of the characters then the anime should be watched at least once.
There is not much romance as it is focused on the other themes but the complex relationships in the series are a delight to watch.
The flaws are easily forgivable too. The character design and the theme song Karma will stick to your mind long after you are done watching the anime.
It does heavily rely on sound but that is a good thing because most of the time it gets it right thereby allowing one to fully immerse in the story.
The plot is an intriguing one and it takes a new approach to the storytelling which is well-executed for the most part. The time jump sequences are also fairly done.
It has plenty of plot twists so if you are into such anime then this anime should be on your watch list.
Coming back to the character development part, the anime takes it slow but it is worth it because it is needed for you to understand their motivations.
It is only one season and so even if you choose to binge-watch it, you can finish it within a few days! Each episode is just about 25 minutes long.
Skit it if…
You are not into tragic and gloomy subjects. Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom is all about topics that not everyone is comfortable talking about or watching.
There is minimal comic relief so if you are a fan of comedy, you might end up finding this anime too depressing from start to finish.
The adult themes are realistically dealt with in the anime series and if you are into supernatural then this anime is surely not for you.
The anime leaves many questions unanswered and you will end up scratching your head wondering what all of that meant.
If you don’t like open-ended questions being left in an anime then it is best to skip this one.
The anime has some plot holes which is normal. But if you are someone who cannot seem to forget such things then you might get annoyed about it rather than enjoy the anime. So skip it if that is the case.
If you have read the visual novel on which this anime series is based, you can skip this one because although it is more or less the same, some things from the novel are missing.
Certain aspects have been changed from the visual novel and so some might not appreciate that at all especially because the changed aspects are more on the realistic side.
If you like perfection, especially in characters and the decisions they make, then you won’t like this anime. Just skip it.
Verdict
Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom doesn’t deserve all the hate it gets. We are not saying it is perfect, but which anime truly is? While this particular anime is in a different league than most anime people know and love today, the anime deserves a chance.
If you have some time then watch the first few episodes and decide for yourself. If you are unable to watch further then skip it or if you get hooked then you can watch all of the 26 episodes.
